Prayer For a Lost Friend

Dear god, whatever be the path that he/she must go,
Whether beside the water that are cool and still,
Or over silent ridges of some far-off hill,
Moon-shadowed, still I pray Thou wilt be there to show
The path, guiding his/her wayward feet throughout the years;
By day a cloud would do-one that is very white
And pure, before him/her always- and for lonely nights
A star; I would not ask that he/she should know no tears;
A falling star that shattered when it fell would be
Along remembered lesson that his/her heart would keep-
But God, when on the trail-forgotten-he must weep,
Give him/her the hand of comfort Thou has given me.
